They feel a bit primitive, but new research shows squat toilets reduce straining and are more sanitary because your skin never contacts a toilet surface. I ran into both types in Nepal. Seeing advanced ecosystems colonizing every square inch of bathrooms (mushrooms on the ceiling!), I definitely preferred the one that let me touch none of it.
